Limerock (viola part – two vlns) MO125CViola Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor4 pages - 2:20 minutes in length Limerock adapted for violin and viola is an arrangement of one of the most beautiful hoedowns in American fiddling literature. Originally a two part tune, Texas fiddling pioneer Benny Thomasson arranged a version that approximates the one most performed today. Mark O’Connor and Edgar Meyer built upon the Thomasson variations to create a unique and thrilling violin and bass duet that first appeared on O’Connor’s Grammy winning recording, New Nashville Cats. O’Connor has adapted the 2nd part to include violin, cello and doublebass to offer four different versions of the arrangement. Limerock is a fine example of how a tune O’Connor learned by ear as a youth evolved into a virtuoso piece in a classical setting. It is most suitable for advanced and intermediate levels. Quartet) MO129DAdapted for string quartet (two violins, viola and cello) by Mark O’ConnorViola Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor21 pages - 31:00 minutes in lengthMovement I (6:40)Movement II (8:21)Movement III (7:51)Movement IV (7:17) Quartet adapted for two violins, viola and cello in four movements, was commissioned by the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival in 1990 and was premiered in August of that year. This piece represents Mark O’Connor’s first work in a classical genre. The original instrumentation called for an unorthodox combination, omitting the usual second violin part and adding bass, to highlight the contrast between his fiddling style and the classical style of the other players. Upon his adapting of the score, O’Connor discovered that in many situations, execution was much more successful with the standard string quartet configuration. The Quartet was released on the Warner Bros. recording, The Fiddle Concerto. O’Connor, Daniel Phillips, Carter Brey and Edgar Meyer were the original cast who helped usher in the new O’Connor music style which helped pave the way for many more pieces to come. In this four-movement work, O’Connor offers a multitude of insights into ways in which traditional fiddling and the classical string writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries resemble each other. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. Appalachia Waltz MO101CAppalachia Waltz adapted for Violin, Viola and Cello by Mark O’ConnorViola Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor2 pages - 7:20 minutes in length Appalachia Waltz by Mark O’Connor is the title track from the album featuring O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release debuted and then stayed for several months at the No.1 position on Billboard Magazine’s Classical music chart. O’Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993. For the recording with Ma in 1996, O’Connor and Meyer re-arranged the waltz for violin, cello and doublebass. As it currently appears in this manuscript, O’Connor adapts the instrumentation for violin, viola and cello for improved playability. Appalachia Waltz might well be one of Mark O’Connor’s most-loved compositions. It utilizes musical inspiration from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, while crafted into a classical music setting. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
